New River Gorge is one of America’s famous whitewater destinations, and rafting is the activity that turns the river from scenery into an experience. You do not, however, need to arrive pretending to be an extreme athlete.
Choose the right trip
Different sections of river and different water conditions produce very different experiences. Reputable outfitters offer trips suited to varying ages and comfort levels. Tell them honestly about your experience rather than booking the most dramatic option because it sounds impressive.
The New River is well known for rafting, while the Gauley River has an even fiercer reputation during its celebrated fall season.
Listen to the guides
Whitewater is inherently active and conditions matter. Follow safety instructions, wear the equipment provided and ask questions when something is unclear.
Stay in the area
I would base myself around Fayetteville rather than driving a long distance before and after rafting. That leaves time for the New River Gorge Bridge, trails and a relaxed meal once you are off the water.
If rafting sounds intimidating, remember that the goal is not to prove anything. Pick a trip appropriate for you. Experiencing the gorge from river level gives you a completely different understanding of its scale.
