Grandview – One of the Best Views in New River Gorge

Grandview lives up to its name. From high above the New River, you look across a huge bend in the gorge with forest covering the slopes almost from top to bottom.

It is one of the New River Gorge stops I would recommend even to visitors who are not serious hikers.

Come for the view, stay for a walk

The main overlooks are the obvious attraction, but walking one of the area’s trails makes the visit feel less like a quick photo stop. Choose a route that matches your time and fitness rather than assuming longer is automatically better.

In autumn, the forest can be spectacular, though peak-color weekends naturally attract more visitors.

Different from Canyon Rim

Canyon Rim is where you go for the classic New River Gorge Bridge view. Grandview is about the river landscape itself. I would include both because they tell different visual stories.

Bring some patience

Mountain weather can obscure a view that looked perfect in the forecast. If clouds roll through, wait a little when you can. Conditions often change.

Grandview is a good example of why New River Gorge deserves more than a couple of hours. The park is not one bridge; it is a long and varied landscape.
