Blackwater Falls State Park – Waterfalls and Mountain Views

Blackwater Falls State Park is one of West Virginia’s classic mountain destinations. Its centerpiece is a broad waterfall where the Blackwater River drops into a forested gorge, creating one of the state’s most recognizable natural scenes.

The water often takes on a dark amber color from natural tannins, which helps give both the river and the falls their distinctive appearance.

Start with Blackwater Falls

The main waterfall is the obvious first stop. Established paths and viewing areas make it possible to appreciate the falls without committing to a major backcountry hike.

Conditions can change with weather and season, so use appropriate footwear and pay attention to park information.

Explore beyond the waterfall

Do not leave immediately after seeing the main falls. The park contains additional trails and viewpoints overlooking the Blackwater Canyon and surrounding Allegheny Mountains.

The combination of forest, rock and deep valley views makes this an excellent place to spend several hours outdoors.

Come for autumn color

Fall is especially beautiful when the surrounding forest changes color, although it is also one of the most popular periods to visit. Winter can transform the landscape completely, while warmer months are ideal for hiking.

Combine it with nearby mountain country

Blackwater Falls works well as part of a longer trip through northeastern West Virginia. The nearby town of Davis and the wider highlands give you plenty of reasons to stay in the area.

I would allow enough time to see more than the famous waterfall. The falls get you through the gate; the mountain landscape is what makes you want to stay.
