Morgantown is one of West Virginia’s liveliest cities, thanks largely to West Virginia University. The university brings students, sports, restaurants and cultural life to a city surrounded by the hills and forests that define much of the state.
For visitors, that combination makes Morgantown feel younger and busier than many communities of a similar size.
Experience a college town
West Virginia University is central to Morgantown’s identity. The campus spreads across different parts of the city, and university life influences everything from cafés and nightlife to major sporting events.
If you visit on a football weekend, expect a very different atmosphere from a quiet weekday. Accommodation and traffic can also be affected, so checking the university calendar is sensible.
Walk along the river
The Monongahela River runs through Morgantown and provides a calmer counterpoint to the busy university areas. Trails along the river are a good way to stretch your legs and see another side of the city.
Eat like a local
A university town usually means plenty of casual food, independent restaurants and inexpensive places to eat. I would leave some room in the itinerary simply to wander and choose somewhere that looks busy with locals and students.
A gateway to northern West Virginia
Morgantown is well positioned for exploring northern West Virginia and is also relatively close to Pennsylvania. Forests, parks and outdoor recreation are never far away.
You do not need to be interested in university life to enjoy Morgantown, but it certainly gives the city much of its personality. Combine the downtown and campus atmosphere with a river walk and you get a good introduction to a more energetic, contemporary side of West Virginia.
