Dolly Sods Wilderness – West Virginia’s Wild High Country

Dolly Sods does not look quite like the West Virginia many first-time visitors expect. High-elevation plains, wind-shaped vegetation, rocky landscapes and wide views give parts of the wilderness an almost northern character.

This is not a casual city park

Dolly Sods is a wilderness area, and I would prepare accordingly. Weather changes quickly, trails can be wet or difficult to follow and mobile service should never be assumed.

Carry a proper map, water, suitable footwear and layers. Tell someone your plans if you are heading onto a longer route.

Why it is worth the effort

The landscape feels remarkably remote considering the wider region. Hikers can find open views, forest and boggy terrain within the same outing, particularly around the high plateau.

Autumn is beautiful but popular. Winter conditions can be severe, and seasonal road access matters.

Combine it with Tucker County

Davis and Thomas make sensible bases, allowing you to pair Dolly Sods with Blackwater Falls and other mountain attractions.

This is not the West Virginia stop I would recommend to someone who only wants a paved overlook. But if you enjoy wild landscapes and are willing to prepare properly, Dolly Sods can become one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
